All ships equipped with AIS transponders exchange their current movement data such as position, course and speed as well as other additional information via the VHF channels 87B and 88B. For vessels on national voyages it is mandatory from GRT and up. Our terrestrial AIS network is constantly expanding and may currently not cover all world regions you are looking for. S-AIS extends the range of the existing maritime Automatic Identification System where previously, detecting vessels only occurred within a relatively short range from shore, and thus allows a more complete global picture. As a satellite orbits the planet it collects data and, transmits that data back down to earth when it is in sight of a compatible ground station. Typically satellites will process this data on-board the satellite and as the processing power is limited to that on-board the satellite itself much data vessel positions may be thrown away. This is where Vesseltracker differs from any other provider. MarineTraffic is a ship-tracking and maritime information service, which was founded by Dimitris Lekkas in It is widely recognised as the world's most comprehensive maritime database and the service is able to boast more than six million unique monthly usersas well as more than one million registered account holders. Essentially, the service was set up by Lekkas because he had an existing interest in computers and ship spotting, and had become interested in the practical uses of AIS vessel tracking technology. Little did he know, he was about to create one of the most important transport databases in the world. The MarineTraffic service is available to use for freealthough a paid version also exists, adding more advance features. MarineTraffic makes use of AIS vessel tracking technology to record million vessel locations each month, while its database also includes information on ships, such as when and where they were built. The MarineTraffic service makes use of AIS tracking technology to provide information about the identification, course, speed and current location of vessels. From there, locations can be overlaid onto Google Maps and, as a result, users can use the service to track the movements of ships and other vessels in real-time. Additionally, some information surrounding ship locations is self-reported from those aboard. This information is then used to provide a more accurate and up-to-date live map of vessel locations. Aside from tracking vessel positions, MarineTraffic also provides background information on vessels, such as where they were built, when they were built, their IMO International Maritime Organisation number, how much they weigh and even photographs of them.
