Germicidal / UV-C LightingWe are out of stock on most air and surface units and are working to bring them back in stock as quickly as possible. The outbreak is also disrupting our supply chain so production may be delayed further. If you have not heard back from us, please try again. Your patience is required with us as we work through this. We greatly appreciate all the business and rest assured that we are doing our very best. We did not send an email with the subject "Don't get sick from the bacteria on your phone". Germicidal UVC Light Bulbs
The shorter the wavelength, the more energetic the radiation, and the more harmful it can be. Shorter wavelength radiation, however, is less able to penetrate human skin. The chart below shows the respective wavelengths in nm that different types of UV lamps produce, and where they fall on the UV spectrum. These are each meant for very different uses and, in the case of germicidal lights particularly, could be hazardous to your health if mixed up. The wavelengths that these UV lamps emit are between —nm, right on the border of visible light. Typical uses include:. BLB bulbs are covered by a very dark blue or purple filter, and give off a purplish glow. Fluorescent tubes — either straight or turned into more compact shapes, like the example pictured — are the most common type but there are other lamp varieties available. While BLB bulbs are not hazardous to your health in the same way that germicidal UVC bulbs are, they should always be handled with care. Wear gloves when handling them to avoid contaminating the bulb, and ensure they are disposed of safely. Avoid long exposure where possible. See here for some more advice on the safe handling and disposal of lightbulbs. Blacklight lamps are not to be confused with the blacklight blue type described above. While they still fall into the same UVA bracket on the ultraviolet spectrum, the slightly shorter wavelengths between nm result in very different effects. Common uses for these bulbs include:. They emit a mixture of ultraviolet and visible light and will appear to glow a luminous blue colour when operating. Again, ensure these bulbs are handled and disposed of with care. These lamps have the shortest UV wavelengths between nm and as a result are potentially the most harmful. Accordingly, extra care should be taken when handling and using these types of UV lights. The type of UV radiation these bulbs emit targets the DNA of microorganisms, causing cell death or making reproduction impossible. Like blacklight UVA lamps, germicidal UVC lights are commonly sold as tubes, either straight or turned into more compact shapes. Unlike the UVA lamps, germicidal tubes are usually transparent. Wear protective clothing when handling germicidal UVC lamps and keep them away from your skin and eyes. It is best to avoid prolonged exposure to the light when it is in operation. Absolutely not! Where can I find fittings for some of these tubes? I would like to build a decontamination box. Are these only for water purification systems? Thank you. Please help!!! UVC has a wavelength of light between nm, please check the packaging or manufacturers specifications. All our germicidal light bulbs have their wavelength of light clearly marked in the product description on our product listing pages. UVC tubes cannot be used in standard fluorescent fittings as a standard fitting is not sealed or enclosed and will allow the UVC light to be exposed. Sorry, we cannot recommend you use UVC light bulbs for this purpose. They are very dangerous to handle. Please read our guide for help in how to keep your home clean.
It is also produced by electric arcs and specialized lights, such as mercury-vapor lampstanning lampsand black lights. Although long-wavelength ultraviolet is not considered an ionizing radiation because its photons lack the energy to ionize atomsit can cause chemical reactions and causes many substances to glow or fluoresce. Consequently, the chemical and biological effects of UV are greater than simple heating effects, and many practical applications of UV radiation derive from its interactions with organic molecules. Short-wave ultraviolet light damages DNA and sterilizes surfaces with which it comes into contact. For humans, suntan and sunburn are familiar effects of exposure of the skin to UV light, along with an increased risk of skin cancer. The amount of UV light produced by the Sun means that the Earth would not be able to sustain life on dry land if most of that light were not filtered out by the atmosphere. Insects, birds, and some mammals can see near-UV i. Ultraviolet rays are invisible to most humans. Nevertheless, the photoreceptors of the retina are sensitive to near-UV, and people lacking a lens a condition known as aphakia perceive near-UV as whitish-blue or whitish-violet. Small birds have a fourth color receptor for ultraviolet rays; this gives birds "true" UV vision. Ultraviolet has a higher frequency and thus a shorter wavelength than violet light. UV radiation was discovered in when the German physicist Johann Wilhelm Ritter observed that invisible rays just beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum darkened silver chloride -soaked paper more quickly than violet light itself. He called them " de- oxidizing rays" German : de-oxidierende Strahlen to emphasize chemical reactivity and to distinguish them from "heat rays", discovered the previous year at the other end of the visible spectrum. The simpler term "chemical rays" was adopted soon afterwards, and remained popular throughout the 19th century, although some said that this radiation was entirely different from light notably John William Draperwho named them "tithonic rays" . The terms "chemical rays" and "heat rays" were eventually dropped in favor of ultraviolet and infrared radiationrespectively. Inthe effect of ultraviolet radiation on DNA was established. A variety of solid-state and vacuum devices have been explored for use in different parts of the UV spectrum. Many approaches seek to adapt visible light-sensing devices, but these can suffer from unwanted response to visible light and various instabilities. Ultraviolet can be detected by suitable photodiodes and photocathodeswhich can be tailored to be sensitive to different parts of the UV spectrum. Sensitive ultraviolet photomultipliers are available. Spectrometers and radiometers are made for measurement of UV radiation. Silicon detectors are used across the spectrum. Scientific instruments can therefore utilize this spectral range by operating in an oxygen-free atmosphere commonly pure nitrogenwithout the need for costly vacuum chambers. Technology for VUV instrumentation was largely driven by solar astronomy for many decades. While optics can be used to remove unwanted visible light that contaminates the VUV, in general, detectors can be limited by their response to non-VUV radiation, and the development of "solar-blind" devices has been an important area of research. Wide-gap solid-state devices or vacuum devices with high-cutoff photocathodes can be attractive compared to silicon diodes. EUV is strongly absorbed by most known materials, but it is possible to synthesize multilayer optics that reflect up to about 50 percent of EUV radiation at normal incidence. Some sources use the distinction of "hard UV" and "soft UV" - in the case of astrophysics the boundary may be at the Lyman limit i. Very hot objects emit UV radiation see black-body radiation. Extremely hot stars emit proportionally more UV radiation than the Sun. There is essentially no UVC. In "partly cloudy" days, patches of blue sky showing between clouds are also sources of scattered UVA and UVB, which are produced by Rayleigh scattering in the same way as the visible blue light from those parts of the sky. UV-B also plays a major role in plant development as it affects most of the plant hormones.
What are Ultraviolet Light Bulbs?
Disinfect and sterilize air, water, and surfaces with short wave ultraviolet radiation. Ultraviolet radiation is harmful to skin and eyes; only install bulbs in fixtures that provide adequate protection. Detect UV-reflective materials that are invisible to the naked eye with these bulbs. They contain a blue filter that absorbs the visible light they produce while allowing long wave ultraviolet UV - A light to pass through. They appear black when turned off. These bulbs are not for use in bug zappers. Plastic - coated glass bulbs are shatter resistant; the coating retains glass shards if they break. Contact Us Order. Log in. Create password.
