Introduction: Steam engines are external combustion engines, where the working fluid is separate from the combustion products. It performs mechanical work by using steam as its working fluid. Steam Turbine Generator Project


The University selected a condensing unit with a high pressure section to accept main steam, and an extraction point to that from the exhaust of the existing turbine TG1 used to satisfy the campus heating load. The turbine generator is equipped with an air cooled condenser. The new 25 MW turbine generator, TG2, supplements the power generation of the existing TG1 during times when the campus demand for steam exceeds the capacity of TG1 to supply it, and the cost of import power is greater than the cost of generating condensing power in TG2. In addition, tie-ins to the main steam lines were arranged at times when campus demand was low enough to allow the main steam system to be out of service without impacting the university campus. Today we are getting a bit artsy with our science! Because harnessing refers to making use of resources to produce energy we decided to try making a homopolar motor. A homopolar motor is probably the simplest DIY motor you can make. Homopolar motors are not useful motors in anything but science experiments but they do demonstrate some interesting concepts and are fun to watch! They are also a great introduction to electricity and electromagnetism. Do not give them to any child who might put them in their mouth, they are dangerous if swallowed and must be surgically removed! Also please note that these motors do heat up. Each dancer will need to be tweaked to get them to dance properly on a battery. Basically homopolar motors demonstrate something called a Lorentz Force. This is a force that is generated when electricity moves through a magnetic field. Our copper wire is conducting electricity from one end of the battery to the other. As it moves through the magnets on the negative side of the battery, it creates a force which causes the wire to spin. Hendrik Lorentz. Steam Powered Electricity Generator

Steam was the energy that powered the early industrial revolution. Steam pistons drove factories. Steam turbines were and still are, responsible for generating most of the world's electricity. A number of steam powered projects are good for demonstrating physics principles and engineering principles. The first step to creating a steam powered machine is to make a steam generator. The first phase to building your steam generator is the type of power to use for heat. Antique steam generators and engines used coal or wood. Although both of these will work well, an electric immersion heater may be a safer alternative as it isn't as much of a fire hazard. The exact tank design will depend on the power source you will use. If you are going to use an immersion heater, fashion a bracket to suspend the immersion heater in the water tank. A good water tank can be made form an empty grapefruit juice can. Cut the top out of the can and make holes for the immersion heater elements so the electrical component will not be inside the tank. Solder the top of the can in place with the immersion heater protruding through the top. Seal the area of the lid where the immersion heater protrudes. Good, high heat tape is a good start, but clay may be necessary for better steam pressure. If you use clay, make sure you allow the clay to harden and cure. Install a re-sealable plumbing fixture on the can. This will serve as a fill point for the tank. Drill a hole for a small metal tube. Fish tank air connectors work well. Solder a small steel pipe through this hole. Using flexible pipe will allow the steam to be routed to something like a piston or a turbine. Steam is very hot. It can cause severe burns. The tank and the steam pipe will both become dangerously hot, handle these with extreme caution. Do not put too much water in the tank to prevent dangerous pressure buildups.
