AGV Based Material Handling System: A Literature Review

In order to suggest a practically relevant future research agenda, first a comprehensive literature review was performed to identify research areas covered in the literature. Then, 15 warehouse managers and senior consultants were interviewed to add empirical input to the development of potential future research areas. The literature review reveals gaps, both methodology- and topic-wise. A considerable methodological imbalance is observed. Some of the highlighted managerial concerns have been investigated in the literature extensively, but the managerial concerns emphasized mostly do not belong to the most researched categories. The suggested future research agenda highlights the importance of supportive aspects of the warehousing business, employment of real data in analysis and empirical research methods. The insights from practitioners stress the expected trends of business environment such as more volatile demand, higher desire for customized services and more expansion of e-commerce. Warehousing is one function in the logistics process that most products flow through. Furthermore, different requirements from different sales channels e-commerce, retail, indirect channels, omni-channelsfrom different production philosophies e. Carter [ 1 ] argues that the gap between research and practice is generated because either the produced knowledge is not relevant to managerial needs or it is not transferred in a proper way. Previous literature studies in the warehousing field have been done by Gu et al. They covered different aspects of warehouse design, operation and performance evaluation. In total, articles and books formed the source of their review. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to identify a future agenda for relevant warehousing research, based on both academic and practitioner interest. This study is done from a logistics and operations management perspective, and its scope is limited to warehouse operations and internal support activities such as warehouse design, performance evaluation, human resource management, as well as direct interfaces to other departments or companies. However, this research does not include inventory management, network design, location planning and engineering aspects. The remaining parts of this paper are organized as follows: First, a brief overview on research method is provided. Second, the literature is analyzed based on a proposed framework. Third, the results of interviews with practitioners are presented to describe their main concerns and views on future warehousing trends. Fourth, the similarities and differences between scholars and practitioners are discussed. Finally, the paper concludes with suggestions for future research agendas and a brief summary. To identify future opportunities for warehousing research, based on both academic and practitioner interest, we start by investigating the current research frontier and academic research proposals through a literature study. Literature review studies have two goals: to map and evaluate the body of the literature in one specific field and to identify the gaps to develop the borders of knowledge in that certain area [ 4 ]. Rowley, Slack [ 5 ] propose that a literature study should be done in following steps: scanning resources, designing the mind map to structure the literature review, writing the study and building the bibliography. This approach is followed here. Performing a literature study is done through an iterative cycle of defining new key words, searching the literature and carrying out the analysis [ 6 ]. As our purpose is to identify future opportunities for research, we focus on publications from the past decade in the journals indexed by Scopus, one of the biggest databases for abstract and citation of research works. It currently covers more than 21, peer-reviewed journals including the journals published by Elsevier, Emerald, Informs, Taylor and Francis, Springer and Inderscience. Refining the papers found based on the focus of this work limited the task to peer-reviewed articles. These papers were published in a wide range of different journals, with different scopes. The review focuses on the methodology employed, the content discussed and the suggestions proposed for future research. Some of the papers could be considered in more than one category. Warehousing is a critical component of the supply chains with the responsibility to receive, store, pick, pack and ship stock keeping units SKUs between suppliers and customers. The supplier and customer can be external companies or other departments in the same company. In order to run the core operations of a warehouse, different supporting activities should also be included. Warehousing should follow a proper strategy that determines the overall guidelines of how operations are conducted; the design of the warehouse needs to be suitable for warehousing activities and assure performance; resources such as space, employees, equipment and technologies should be provided to run the business as planned.

World War II impacted storage in several ways, including the need to increase the size of stores and the need for more mechanized methods of storing and retrieving the products and materials. As mass production grew throughout manufacturing, the needs of efficient and effective storage capabilities grew with it. Store is a function of materials management in an organization. Hence it is generally found that stores function reports to the materials manager. But in some situations stores function reports to the production function. The earlier type of arrangement is based on the concept that stores along with other functions of materials management can be integrated into the materials organization. This will stream line all materials management functions effectively. The other arrangement is leaning on the fact that production function is very closely linked to stores and a common command can reduce cost and increase effectiveness and also keep material accounting outside the scope of procurement function. Centralized stores concept is to store all items at a central place and control materials movement from this central place whereas decentralization concept is moving the material to the respective consumer function or directly to the points of use. Centralization or Decentralization then is a matter of convenience. However, one basic organizational feature must be observed. The entire stores setup should be under the unified control of one department with senior controller of stores in charge, in order to efficiently achieve the objectives of the function of stores. Stores Systems and Procedures operate the stores every day. Systems and procedures should undergo continuous review to avoid redundancy and rigidity. Continuous review in the form of PDCA should provide the benefit experience of implementation. These activities are tied together by procedures so that transparency comes in and variations due to individual personalities are limited. The system should take care of physical flow of materials and flow of information. When one deals with large number of items, depending on physical description of the item becomes unreliable. Hence we need a system which provides a unique identification for each item in the stores. Materials suppliers to stores follow their own numbering system for identification. Hence it is primary responsibility of stores management to develop a unique identification system to facilitate clear communication internally. Serial numbers are assigned in sequence to the materials as they arrive in the stores. This is a unique system as every item will possess a unique identification number. But it will not be possible to identify the family of parts to which this particular part belongs. This type of numbering will not reveal any classification of the part. This is a system using numerical, alphabets or a combination of both for identifying a part or item. Following is an example: 1 52 43 25 First digit 1, stands for general class to which this item belongs like say, raw material. Second two digits indicate the generic class like say, bars. Third two digits indicate steel rounds and the last two digits indicate the specific number. Similarly alphabets or alphanumeric can be used in place of numbers.
