Preaching is more than just presenting a speech or just another example of oration like the State of the Union given by the President each year or a graduation address delivered encouraging new college graduates to achieve great goals with their new degrees. At the heart of it, preaching is speaking the very words of God to people. Preaching under this understanding is standing in the place of God and speaking out the sermons that He wrote and spoke Himself in Scripture. Once we understand what preaching is it is important to understand the content of preaching. The content center of preaching should be Christ. So unwilling to put your trust in everything the prophets spoke! Christ as the Center of All Preaching As we saw from Jesus above as He opened the eyes of the disciples at Emmaus that beginning with Moses, the first five books of the Bible and continuing through the prophets, Jesus explained that He was spoken about throughout the whole of the Hebrew Scriptures. We can see this also in Luke chapter 4, when Jesus went into the synagogue in Nazareth one Sabbath and He was called to read from the Prophet Isaiah, chapter 61 that reads: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to announce good news to the poor. After reading from Isaiah, Jesus makes the comment, "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing" Luke Though a short sermon it makes the point that this passage which was known to have Messianic significance by his hearers was applied by Jesus to himself. Jesus made it a point to in his messages to highlight that the Scriptures spoke of Him and should have been sufficient to draw the People to understand who He was and that He was the Messiah that Moses and the Prophets spoke. In confronting the religious leaders that doubted Him as a Prophet of God Jesus responded, "You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me" John Jesus by His example to us demonstrates that the whole of Scripture can and does speak of Him and can be used for witness to Him. Given the example of our Lord, we can and should seek to present sermons with Christ at the center. In the past, in our Christian culture, preachers could perhaps assume that many or most of their hearers would instinctively make connections between the message of the sermon and Jesus Christ. But one cannot make such assumptions in a post- Christian culture. With our goal of making Christ the focus and explicit in our sermons it is important to not fall into the trap of taking an allegorical view of the Old Testament to place a New Testament message about Christ into the Old Testament text abandoning the original meaning of the Old Testament text Greidanus,p. In pursuing to bring out a message of Christ from many Old Testament passages it is important to understand that there is a context to the passages for their time and that the preacher does not have to force Christ into all of the Old Testament passages to be preaching Christ from all the Scripture.
