Details of how to prepare your report, including the standard formatting used in the Department, can be found on the Skills section of our Departmental Laboratory web pages. Supplementary information particular to certain activities may be given by the laboratory leader. Students with visual impairment or other difficulties should consult their laboratory supervisor. Available to download below are a number of files to help you produce laboratory reports that conform to our guidelines; these are also available on the Laboratory web pages. It is recommended that you save them all to a single folder in your filespace. A simple user's guide to LaTeX is available on the Laboratory web pages. Please note that you are not required to use LaTeX to produce your lab reports; students with dyslexia may wish to bear this in mind if they plan to make use of DSA-supported proofreading services, which may require Word format. The Skills section of our departmental Laboratory web pages contains a wealth of appropriate resources to help you as you produce your laboratory reports. This includes written content, use of English and the production of graphical material. Also available there is a model lab report, to give you an example of what to aim for. The experiment written up for this example is an old Level 1 experiment we used to run in the Epiphany Term, which is now discontinued. This document should give you a good idea of the content, structure and presentation that we would expect from an excellent Level 1 report; however, please note that reports that do not strictly follow the example may still get top marks — this document merely shows what an excellent report might look like. Since the Department has awarded Prizes for Graphical Excellence in laboratory reports. The prizes are awarded for the optimal presentation of quantitative data to best illustrate a particular physical phenomenon. Optimal presentation should include appropriate choice of data, theory, axis scaling and labelling, and aesthetic value, and may include innovative plotting ideas and originality. If you are preparing a lab reportit may help to have a template to work from. This science fair project lab report template allows you to fill in the blanks, making the write-up process easier. Use the template with the instructions for writing a science lab report to ensure success. Here's a quick look at the types of information you should put in the parts of the lab report and a gauge of how long each section should be. It's a good idea to consult other lab reports, submitted by a different group that received a good grade or is well-respected. Read a sample report to know what a reviewer or grader is looking for. In a classroom setting, lab reports take a long time to grade. You don't want to keep repeating a mistake if you can avoid it from the start! Lab reports are time-consuming for both students and graders, so why are they so important? There are two key reasons. First, a lab report is an orderly method of reporting the purpose, procedure, data, and outcome of an experiment. Essentially, it follows the scientific method. Second, lab reports are easily adapted to become papers for peer-reviewed publication. For students serious about pursuing a career in science, a lab report is a stepping-stone for submitting work for review. Even if results aren't published, the report is a record of how an experiment was conducted, which can be valuable for follow-up research. Share Flipboard Email. Anne Marie Helmenstine, Ph. Updated March 02, Generally, these are the headings you'll use in a lab report, in this order:. Title: This should accurately describe the experiment. Don't try to be cute or funny. Date: This can be the date you did the experiment or the day you completed the report. Lab Partners: Who helped you with the experiment? List their full names. If they represent other schools or institutions, credit this too. Purpose: Sometimes this is called the objective. It is either a single sentence summary of why the experiment or product was performed or else a single paragraph. Introduction: Describe why the topic is of interest.
27.8: Sample lab report (Measuring g using a pendulum)
A pendulum exhibits simple harmonic motion SHMwhich allowed us to measure the gravitational constant by measuring the period of the pendulum. We plan to measure the period of one oscillation by measuring the time to it takes the pendulum to go through 20 oscillations and dividing that by We constructed the pendulum by attaching a inextensible string to a stand on one end and to a mass on the other end. The mass, string and stand were attached together with knots. The uncertainty is given by half of the smallest division of the ruler that we used. We repeated this measurement five times. We transcribed the measurements from the cell-phone into a Jupyter Notebook. This was calculated using the mean of the values of g from the last column and the corresponding standard deviation. This is consistent with the fact that our measured periods are systematically higher. We also worry that we were not able to accurately measure the angle from which the pendulum was released, as we did not use a protractor. Additionally, a protractor could be taped to the top of the pendulum stand, with the ruler taped to the protractor. Theory A pendulum exhibits simple harmonic motion SHMwhich allowed us to measure the gravitational constant by measuring the period of the pendulum. Procedure The experiment was conducted in a laboratory indoors. Construction of the pendulum We constructed the pendulum by attaching a inextensible string to a stand on one end and to a mass on the other end.
