I've been looking at some iron at Home Depot or Menards, and was wondering how hard it is to just weld something up in the shape of a V and put some angle iron on the front of the house for mounts? Any tips or ideas you guys have used would be great! I've just been hooking the rope around the rear rack so far this winter You're only limited by your own creativity. One thing I would suggest is to make sure that you have a backer plate that spans the entire width of your hitch on the sled to reduce the amount of stress. If you see another sled out on the lake with a rigid hitch, ask to check it out. It wouldn't be hard to duplicate or come up with something better. I second that. I use the PVC method but instead of PVC I use the grey conduit pipe because it is a little more flexible and not quite as brittle in the cold weather. All you have to do is put the rope through it and tie a loop that will go over a ball hitch or use a clevis to attach it to a standard hitch. Works great and the best thing is you can take it on and off fairly easy. Grey conduit here I come! I use the pvc pipe method. I have two equal lengths of it strung on the tow rope with enough free rope between them to do a couple of wraps around the ball hitch. Quick and cheap and easily removeable if needed. Great post! I was just thinking about this last night on how to make a hitch for a smaller utility sled that I have. Conduit and thick rope, FF here I come too. I had a Jet Sled hitch from Shappel from my old fishouse and use that on my X2. Haven't used it much but it works so far. The conduit will only cost a couple dollars. I made mine about 4' long to get the sled away from the wheeler some. I also bought some rubber washers that I put rope first that went between the sled and the conduit to protect the sled from being scratched up from the pipe although I doubt this would happen. I also bought new rope so I could reuse the factory rope if I ever wanted to use it again. Size of rope does not matter, I used strong, smaller diameter rope so it fit throught the conduit very easily. By doing this I had to tie the rope to something on the other side of the sled to prevent the knot from being pulled through the hole. I think I used a bolt so it would go in but wouldn't be pulled out, you could use a fender washer or pretty much anything.

Looking for idea's for pulling my portable Ice Shelter around the lake by hand. When there is enough ice I just use my truck, but with the lack of ice I hate pulling my shelter around by using the thin crappy yellow nylon rope. Does anyone have any DIY idea's? So far so good pulling my ProTC, but have only used it on glare ice. It allows you to walk in a more up right fashion, though, making it a little easier on the glare ice, less likely to fall on your butt. Literally effortless walking with ice cleats, no more sore shoulders from holding on the rope either. It should get the real test this weekend in the snow. I do like the fact that it keeps both your hands free, easier to drink a cup of coffee on the walk out or use the GPS. For now, I just used a single u-bolt. You can make or find something that will do the job but this is the real deal as you can pull a sled with little effort in a comfortable manner. The straps and harness hook together with metal clips and rings so it can be used as a tow strap if a friend has a vehicle on the ice. Worth doing a search. No bindings, but use wood or galvanized pipe, screw uprights in baseplate right into the skis, and make cross members, and you have a lift on ski's. Keeps it out of the snow, reduces drag, behind an ATV it keeps from making a snowstorm behind you. Just put some U bolts in the shanty base to hold onto the rack Sounds complicated, but what the heck else you gonna do in your mancave when you gotta stay home and appear busy!? One more thing I put 2" PVC tubes about five feet long over my tow ropes to keep the thing from running into my ATV when I stop and wrapping the towropes around my rear tires This year have a flip-over and I will make a harness to put across my chest. I have some backpack straps that I will attach to my tow rope. The reality is that I have never had money or the privlidges it brings private land, direct lake access, atv's,sleds,etc. Hunting and fishing. A lot nicer when you don't have to twist your body to the side and have the hands free. There are times I would like snowshoes, but I will never buy the "Atlas" brand due to poor customer service. I made my rope longer so that the sled pulls rather than "lifts" like what happens with the yellow rope because it is short. I took clear plastic hose and ran the rope through it. I cut 3 pieces of plactic hose approximately " long. I then tied a loop knot in the rope so the hose piece would stay there with the loop being big enough to easily grab it with gloves on. The other two piece I pulled them straight out from each corner so that if you were to have 2 people pulling they would be the same distance from each corner of the shack and about the width of the shack apart. The hose is nice because it is bigger diameter and doesn't cut into your hand like the rope does.
