Won't give RPM directly but a bit of maths could sort that out. Grits: Since you are thinking about mounting a tach, I assume that your VFD will not give you a readout in rpm. If this is the case, then you do need to calibrate the VFD readout using a tach or a rev counter. But I don't see why you need to have one permanently mounted. Post the table near the machine. VFD's are reliable - they give repeatable spindle speeds for any given readout of their display. Here is a low-cost half or a third the price of a "real" tach tachometer method.

Basically, the main function of a lathe is to make components like bushings and shafts which are cylindrical in shape. Lathes creates symmetry within the workpiece for either artistic or functional purposes. Typically, almost all mechanical and engineering devices rely on lathe components. Therefore a lathe is a great tool to haveespecially if you are an inventor with interests in things such as motorcycles, robotics, microscopy, astronomy, RC cars, planes, helicopters, boats. They are also used in car repair, motorcycle repair and repair of household a-appliances and fixtures. A metal lathe can also be used by an artisan for making and designing bangles, beads among other jewelry materials. As the name suggests, these are small lathes mainly used for home workshop or MRO shop. A mini-metal lathe is a miniature version of the general purpose center lathe or industrial metal-working lathes. They are extremely versatile machines that are used to create and produce variety of objects either as complete mechanical systems or as component parts. They are quite different in their designing and feature swings ranging between 3 to 7 inches in diameter. These refers to the diameter and length in inches of a workpiece that the lathe is capable of working on. Many of the old hands who use a metal turning lathe have never had a speed readout and many of them have added some form of readout. I have been doing some milling using end mills, and now that I have a speed readout I see I have been running the mill bits at too high a speed. So, I am very pleased I have sorted this out now and fitted this tachometer. I have seen videos of a number of ways to add one of these speed readout to the lathe and I decided to go with this idea. I felt it was simple and did not break into the lathe too much. Sorry the 1st digit is a bit faint in this image - I took a number of images to get the full display from this distance and they were all the same. The little magnet must be mounted with the right side towards the sensor - it will not work the other way around. I decided I would mount the sensor behind the spindle gear and through a slot I cut out of the gear cover. I found that If I made a steel washer with a small bent over piece I could mount the magnet at the back end of the lathe spindle between the two nuts. See the 1st image. Any piece of galvanized steel plate will do and the magnet will stick to it for the test. Then I made a right angle bracket out of the same piece of galvanized plate.
