What is a mini metal lathe? A lathe is a machine tool used for rotating a workpiecewhether wood or metal on its axis. The aim of rotating the workpiece is to sand, deform, reform or drill aspects of the metal piece. Basically, the main function of a lathe is to make components like bushings and shafts which are cylindrical in shape. Lathes creates symmetry within the workpiece for either artistic or functional purposes. Typically, almost all mechanical and engineering devices rely on lathe components. Therefore a lathe is a great tool to haveespecially if you are an inventor with interests in things such as motorcycles, robotics, microscopy, astronomy, RC cars, planes, helicopters, boats. Ron Scrapmetal had mentioned that he wanted to post a review of this product when he gets a chance. I'm not trying to scoop him, just add to the available info. I'm looking forward to Ron's review as well. The package arrived around 3PM last Monday. Work has been short lately, so I was home to sign for it. The manual is available on the web site but I haven't found it and on the forum but my registration hadn't gone through yet. It looks like Adam mounted the sensor in the spindle cap and is using putty to hold the magnet on the spindle. I would have done it a little differently. Adam made a very inexpensive tachometer for his variable speed X2 mini-mill using a cyclometer bicycle speedometer. Someone left a comment with a link to a tutorial on Instructables with more details about making one of these. The sensor sends a signal to the cyclometer every time the magnet goes by it. He says those numbers will display the RPM in hundreds, regardless of circumference of the object you mounted the magnet on. The original cyclometer is a tachometer, its just doing some math to its RPM measurement before printing the number to the LCD. If we mount the magnet on the hub of the wheel, or the rim of the wheel, its still passing the sensor the same number of times per minute. And giving us the same speed reading. I went with a 12 function Bell cyclometer from Walmart and it is doing the same thing as stated above. Mine gets to 9. It drops off and starts registering lower speeds.
