Nvidia Quadro k2000m upgradeability in a DELL Precision m4700

The graphic card is good enough for the applications I'm running right now, but I'm wondering if it will be possible to upgrade it in the future KM or morebecause I'm planning to install new applications which may request a better video card. Go to Solution. View solution in original post. No, it's not - the video chip is part of the mainboard and cannot be replaced there is no socket for a separate video card. Why people like you with no knowledge are so sure about what they know. Make some research. The videocard for Precision M can be replaced or upgraded. Has anybody actually done this? Not even during boot up. KM and KM require different slot specs. MXM 3. They are not even the same size or wattage. How is that possible, since the two cards are a different size. The cards that fit the m are smaller cards. Again there is no room for a km in the m Browse Community. Turn on suggestions. I also have an M My questions involve the order of the upgrades in order to isolate potential problems and since I am a designer and not a computer geek if I need to do anything regarding Bios updates, firmware upgrades etc before I start replacing any of the components on my laptop? In some images, I have seen that Dell has heat transfer pads? Is there sufficient contact between the CPU and video card and the heat sink for just the Arctic Silver to make the contact after cleaning up the previous goo of course? Any tips here. Any tips on this process? I really wanted to make sure that BIOS and firmware upgrades were completed if needed…and I have never done those before. Hopefully, Windows 7 will lead me through the system install process and it will all occur flawlessly. Any tips and words of encouragement you can share J. Thank you for taking the time. Hey David! I will go ahead and do a quick rundown, then will do a more thorough one if needed. Make sure you have an approriately size phillips screw driver. It is about the only tool you will need for this project! And for your Intel SSD you will also want to check and make sure you have the latest firmware. I recommend doing this before you install Win 7 as sometimes an SSD firmware update will require wiping the drive…. The memory will be angled and that is the same angle you want to use when full seating the new memory before pressing it down and engaging the locking tabs. It can make reassembly that much easier and it stinks to lose a screw! SUMMARY: there is rambling below, but basically I think you should be fine especially if you have a late model M with using only thermal paste [no pads]. My theory is that either a the tolerances between the polished GPU surface and the copper heat sink are not very close [i. Are you talking about M or E? If the factory heatsink made full contact with the GPU die, I would have just used paste, and would not have needed to use a copper shim to ensure contact. The newer M have paste. The first M had pads. Perhaps the pads are easier to install, but they performe very bad! Dell should get rid of them! Sorry to not have a more definitive answer here, BUT if you use a high quality thermal paste and follow the instructions you should be okay. I have been okay and so have a lot of other people. You should at least be fine to get continue using Windows etc. Boot from the CD and run the firmware update… it will give you some prompts etc. Are you actually able to use the Sata ii drive at its rated transfer rate with the m?

After all, who wants to scour some obscure forum to find out whether blowing a wad of cash on a GPU from eBay will work? Enter Eurocom, a Canadian laptop vendor that in February began offering one-stop-shop upgrade kits for consumers who want to take the risk of performing the equivalent of open-heart surgery on a laptop. Even better, the kits cover competing vendors as well as Eurocom itself, natchsuch as Alienware. To find out how well these kits work and how the laptop upgrade process goes, PCWorld decided to upgrade a laptop and run the numbers. Most of the upgrades available from Eurocom are aimed at the Big Berthas of laptop gaming that push the definition of portable. The older one was Fermi-based and far slower. The physical part of the upgrade is fairly straightforward, but there are some things you should check off before you continue. Eurocom supports Clevo units in addition to Alienware units. Once you find a GPU for your laptop, read the fine print. You may need a certain-level BIOS on the laptop for it to work, and you may also need a certain-level power brick too. This may be enough to dissuade some from doing so. You then power down, unplug and pull the battery out. Eurocom warns you should also take the usual ESD precautions, and wear a grounding strap. You can a live high-risk life we do and just do it without any of that, but at least discharge any built-up static electricity in your body, and rethink doing it on the retro shag carpet you just installed on a low-humidity day. On the PEM, remove four screws and slide off the bottom cover. In pure performance, the quad-core Ivy Bridge chip is just as fast as a similarly priced Haswell quad-core chip. Once all seven screws are removed from the two heatpipes, you use the paper tabs on the heatpipes to pull them off gently. At the same time, use common sense on how much force to use to remove it. Gently rocking it around a bit may also help break the seal of the thermal paste. With both heat pipes moved, you now have access to the MXM module. Two hex-shaped nuts that also must be removed. You can use a small box wrench, crescent wrench, pair of pliers or flathead screwdriver to break them loose. Once loose, back both off using your fingers. The module will not gently rock up at an angle and out of the slot. Most of the screws and offsets looked the same, but I ended up using the new ones to be safe. The heat pipes looked a little different, so I decided to use the new ones, assuming they were matched to the M GPU. Install the heat pipes, making sure to avoid the typical rookie move of leaving the protective plastic cover on the thermal paste. The graphics upgrade kit I received from Eurocom comes with a thermal pad applied to the heat pipe. Just make sure to avoid rookie mistake Remember to pull off the protective plastic sheet off. Unlike a CPU, which has an integrated heat spreader to protect it, the GPU core is directly exposed for maximum cooling. Chipping a bit off the edge by pressing down too hard on it will destroy it. Exercise caution at this stage. With everything installed, put the bottom cover back on. Install the battery and plug it in and power up. If you did it all correctly, it should power up and boot into Windows.
