Alongside powerstancing, which they also scrapped for DS3 and replaced with the arbitrarily-combined paired weapons, hexes are probably one of the best innovations in DS2 - it was an asset to the gameplay. I will never have a firm understanding on their decision to disregard the progressions DS2 pushed. It was completely counterintuitive.
