This article describes previous changes to the default versioning setting for SharePoint Online document libraries. Changes were made previously to SharePoint Online that enable the Create major versions setting for all document libraries on current sites. By default, this configuration is also enabled for document libraries on all newly created sites. Document versioning lets you recover earlier versions of your files so that you can revert to an earlier version if you want to. For most users, there should be no additional action required. In the unlikely event that your storage quota runs low, users and administrators can resolve these issues by performing one of the following actions:. When enabled, new versions are added to an item's history after changes are saved. The number of versions stored and the visibility of draft or minor versions can be modified for each list and library. In the Version Settings page, you have the following settings available:. Create a version each time you edit a file in this document library using either major versions only, or major and minor versions. Go to the list or library with the item or document for which you want to view history. Next to the item for which you want to view history, select the View the current document. Restore the document. It will add it as a new version. Delete the document. Reject this version. In the Version Settings page, the following settings are available:. Create a version each time you edit a file in this document library, either major versions only, or major and minor versions. Navigate to the list or library you plan to work in. For Document Librariesin the Item Version History section, under Create a version each time you edit a file in this document library? For Listsin the Item Version History section, under Create a version each time you edit an item in this list? For libraries, set a number under Keep drafts for the following number of major versions. Any user who can read items. Only users who can edit items. Restricts the view of drafts to those who have permissions to edit. Only users who can approve items and the author of the item. Restricts the view to only the original author of the item, and those who have permissions to approve items in the list. From the View dialog, you may be able to edit, though it's usually disabled. It adds it as a new version. Unpublish this version shows when you are using approval and publishing on your documents or items. You can specify how many versions of items or files to keep. From the View dialog, you delete or restore the item, or return to the version history. You can configure other settings that affect versioning.
