GM Muscle Car Tach Voltage Requirements - Pit Stop

A tachometer measures the number of times an engine's crank shaft rotates per minute RPM. For any engine, the RPM determines how much horsepower and torque is being produced at any given moment. Connect a tachometer to an engine and know when the engine is running at peak performance and when it may be working too hard. Too many engine revolutions will create excess heat, and reduces an engine's reliability. Protect any engine from excess wear and tear with the RPM data an easy to install tachometer can give you. Work in a well-lit area with access to the equipment you need once you have begun to connect a tachometer to your vehicle. Raise the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery and keep it from coming in contact during tachometer installation. Locate the ignition coil and clean the negative side connector and any adapters that may be present. Remove any oxidation or debris from this location where the tachometer sender wire will be secured. Find a good place to pass a wire through the firewall in front of the driver's compartment. Position the tachometer over the center of the steering column and fasten it securely using a mounting clamp and bracket fitting to the steering column of the vehicle. The tachometer will have wires coming from the back of the gauge. One is a ground wire, one is a power supply sire, and one connects the vehicle's ignition system either via the ignition coil or through an electronic connection with the vehicles computerized ignition. A system without a distributor will need to connect to the electronic ignition. Check with the gauge manufacturer for the GREEN wire connection path that suits the ignition system installed in your vehicle. The steps for the power supply and ground wires on all tachometers are the same. Tape together the wires that are protruding out the back of the gauge until the wires meet the dashboard. Secure the wires under the dashboard with tie wraps or by using existing harness paths to run the wires in conduit that houses existing wires. Find a pathway for the green wire to run through the firewall in front of the driver under the dashboard. Protect any wires from chaffing inside a firewall hole by protecting it with a rubber grommet and silicon gel. This makes the wire safe and seals the hole from the outside. Run the power supply wire to the fuse panel and tap into a fuse with a fuse tap. Find a fuse that operates on the turning of the ignition key. When the key is turned and the auxiliary power is supplied, the tachometer should also be lit for use. The ground wire must be secured in a paint free connection with the major parts of the vehicle. A great place to ground any gauge is at the mounting bracket for the pedal assemblies. Gas, brake, or clutch mounts are a great place to loosen a nut and insert a ground wire for an auxiliary component or electronic device.

Guys, I did a search and came up empty I have to admit that I am more of a traditional points type of guy wired many Tachs on my point cars and this electronic ignition is foreign shit to me. I just installed a brand new Sun Retro Tach in my 55 chevy. I have the power wire connected to the electronic ignition switch seperate switch from the keylamp wire to the headlight switch, ground wire to the body ground strap. When I flip the ignition switch ON the tach needle moves to the 0 PRM point which I presume is showing it has power, the light works, however I do not have the most important part the signal??? I connected the signal wire to the only treminal left on the HEI distributor cap, but I am not sure it the right treminal for this wire. Anyone know where I am going wrong? Please help! Thanks, Tex. The only way I know of to hook a tach to an Hei is on the Tach connection that Badshifter showed in the diagram above. Hooking it up any other way won't get you a signal. How to Connect a Tachometer


I was suggested this website by my cousin. I'm not sure whether this post is written by him as no one else know such detailed about my problem. You are incredible! I've tried this permutation procedure and found it works to my aftermarket tacho meter, although my wiring has different color coded. But then my bike is loosing power. No problem if sensing wire disconnected from ignition coil. It seems that tacho sensor is drawing too much electric current from the coil. Any suggestion to solve that problem?? Transistor base draws only a few milliamperes current for activation. You will need to find out base resistor value to adjust transistor current to match with tacho sensing current. The transistor is working like a relay switch to supply current for tacho to sense engine speed, and that relay switch is controlled by coil or igniter. Rgs, Heru. Hi guys I used rpm aftermarket for my motocycle 4 stroke cc. Why should i do. There is no direct connection between tachometer system and transmission system. But may be your motorbike has electronic gear indicator. That indicator may steal some electric current and affect your tacho. Tachometer needs a very good ground wiring to ensure a steady measurement. Try to ground negative your tacho directly to negative pole of battery. Do not ground on the frame, do not use a common ground wire. Possibly that common ground wire is already overloaded. Possibly you are needed to check the positive wire also, try to connect it directly to battery positive pole, not via ignition switch. HEI Distributor- Tach wiring issues??

Troubleshooting the HEI coil in cap ignition. Troubleshooting a faulty or inoperative ignition should always use a logical approach. Overlooking the basics will leave to frustration and unnecessary time and expense. The first thing to remember that the system needs to have power. Make sure the power connection to the distributor cap or the coil is good, no blown fuses, no broken, loose or corroded connections. A good 12V powered test light should always be one of the basic troubleshooting tools you need, along with a reasonable priced digital-volt-ohmmeter. Use a DVOM for testing, calibrate meter scale some do automatically to read zero when the leads are touching each other. Do this before testing coil to insure greatest accuracy. If meter will not calibrate to read less than 0. This is the terminal for the coil-in-cap HEI ignition power. With the key turned on engine offthere should be full battery power here. If not, you will need to check for loose connections by tracing back the wire as far as you can. Also check the fuse that protects the circuit from overload. If the fuse is blown, you will need to do further troubleshooting to find and correct the reason why the fuse blew. Short to ground is the most common cause. The connection TACH to the left is the tachometer output. Probe the TACH terminal on the dist. The test lamp should blink repeatedly as the engine cranks. Further testing is required to pinpoint the problem. As you pull the coil cover off, these are the connections you are looking at and how they are identified. In the picture on the right, see how this correlates with the ignition module. Study the picture below of the full diagram with the ignition coil. Now with the diagram broken down to just the ignition coil, we can get an idea of the connections on how to troubleshoot for a faulty coil. The first thing to remember that there is no physical connection between the coil windings.
