A Cell Is Like A High School


This was meant as a project I and four other classmates created in the sixth grade that I had assembled on a website at the time. We are all sophomores in highschool now and have gone our separate ways. With that said, there will be no maintenance or updates to the site in the foreseeable future. We ask that you use this simply as a resource to help fuel your imagination and not something to be plagiarized blindly. I hope that this will be able to aid many more students as I wish I had a resource like this when I was assigned this project. Good luck on your projects and have a good day. The nucleus is like the coach on a basketball team. The Nucleus is the command center of the cell and directs all cell activities. On a basketball team, the coach directs play. Nothing would happen right without the coach, the same is true for the nucleus. The mitochondria are like the cheerleaders, fans, and mascot of a basketball team. The Mitochondria is the power plant of the cell and releases energy needed for cell activities. The fans led by the mascot and the cheerleaders usually get players fired up and gives them the desire to win which translates into energy. The Cell Membrane contains the cell and is partly responsible for its shape. For instance, a Pick and Roll is like the Cell Membrane because the team has to be in the right type of formation or shape to be able to make a successful Pick and Roll. The cell has to be in the right shape for it to continue functioning. The Cell Membrane is also flexible. A basketball team has to be flexible because if the Pick and Roll or another play does not go right then they have to transfer into another play or into defense. A vacuole on a basketball court would be the central circle because in a cell a membrane sac plays roles in digestion and the release of cellular waste products. This relates to a center circle on a basketball court because when bad things happen that is where it goes. The Golgi apparatus would be most like the water boy in basketball because it groups things up and produces things like the water boy gathers things up and gives them to the players. The cytoplasm could be the basketball court because all of the basketball players play on it. The cytoplasm is where all of the cell activities take place. The basketball court holds all of the players in it so they have somewhere to play. The ribosome could be the trainer because the trainer trains the players and keeps them healthy by giving them protein and helping them gain muscle. The ribosome gives the cell protein. The center is like the cell wall because the center gives the team extra protection from the opponent if they get close. The cell wall gives the cell extra protection from harmful things and gives sturdiness to the plant, and so does a center. The endoplasmic reticulum is kind of like the point guard a basketball team. The endoplasmic reticulum works as part of a packaging and storing system along with other organelles. Just like that, the point guard stores plays and strategies given by the coach in their head and uses them when needed. The lysosome is like the towel boys or mop boys on a basketball team. They protect the players from injury by mopping up dust, sweat, or anything that might cause them to trip.

Understanding and memorizing the basic cell model for a plant or animal cell is an important step for biology students to accomplish. Plant and animal cells are similar except that plant cells have many large fluid-filled sacks called vacoules and rigid cell walls where animal cells do not. Vacoules are also present in animal cells, but they are much smaller and contribute less to the cell's structure than in plant cells. Every cell model needs a cytoplasm for the organelles to sit upon. This base can be made of foam, clay or even craft dough. Shape the base so that it is flat and ovular animal cell or rectangular plant cell. If using clay or craft dough, make a flat layer for the rest of the organelles to stick to. Be sure to use either a bright or dark color for the cytoplasm and to use the opposite for the organelles so they stand out against the cytoplasm. If using foam, cut out a flat surface and color the cytoplasm in with markers. For clay or craft dough models, choose different colors for different organelles. Make sure that none of your organelles are the same color as your background. The nucleus can be colored dark blue while the mitochondria can be green and the lysozomes yellow. Roll clay or craft dough into long, worm-like strands to make smooth endoplasmic reticulum ER. Rough ER can be constructed in the same manner, but layered with small different colored balls to represent ribosomes dotting the rough ER. Create a chart identifying the organelles and display it next to your model. For foam models, you can use basic woodcarving tools to create grooves you can color in with markers while using toothpicks with small pieces of paper taped to them that identify each part of the cell. Color in each organelle and use a black or darker colored marker to shade or add other visual characteristics to each organelle. For example, draw another circle in the nucleus to represent the nucleolus, then draw crisscross patterns within the nucleolus to further differentiate it from the nucleus. Consider the classic gingerbread house approach to building a cell model. Where you would normally use clay, foam or markers, you can use gingerbread icing and candy. Be sure to use smaller candy like red hots, marshmallows or chocolate eggs to make organelles while using rope candy like licorice strands to make ER. Geltain can also be used to make a cell model where the cytoplasm is represented by a large slab of gelatin cooled in a 1 gallon freezer bag in the refrigerator. Then, candies like jellybeans, gummy worms or gumdrops can be pinned to the gelatin with labeled toothpicks to make organelles.
