It turns out the dipstick tube is held in at the bottom with a bolt which isnt too hard to get to once the undertray is removed. The wiring went to 4 things, the servo motor on the manifold, the starter motor liver terminal, something down underneath by the base of the dipstick tube and something to the right hand side under the manifold. Lifting the manifold up gave enough room to disconnect them all. I have just one question, there is a pipe that runs from the very rear of the cylinder head, it looks like it drains any water or diesel that ends up around the injectors, does this connect to anything? The physical replacement of the Mercedes four cylinder CDI diesel engine is a major mechanical job by any means, but thanks to some good engineering and designed-in serviceability, this is not to be feared. To undertake this task you must posess a reasonable general tool kit and have at least a reverse torx socket set and the use of an engine hoist. First raise the bonnet hood. Remove the battery from the tray. Pull up the two radiator retainers and take off the rubber dampers, top either side of the radiator. Remove the grille, slam panel, removing the bonnet catch bowden cable and right hand headlamp looking from the front. Undo the water hoses from the engine, at the thermostat and water pump spigots then release the hose from the steel pipe above the exhaust manifold and the one on the opposite side feeding the electric circulation pump. Remove the turbo hoses from either side, to and from the intercooler. Remove the upper supply hose to the inlet manifold. Remove the air box lid and take out the filter, extract the air box base. Take off the turbo supply pipework and disconnect the crankcase breather heater. Disconnect the diesel feed and return lines from the fuel filter. Remove the upper half of the inlet manifold, and plug the inlet ports with rag or paper to prevent anything being dropped in there. Remove the plastic injector cover if fitted. Undo the clips on the upper air distribution ducting above the inlet manifold and slide off the removable section. On AC equipped vehicles the condenser too would have to be removed. Orientate the oil cooler loop upwards towards the battery tray and tie it to the bulkhead to keep it out of the way. Remove the turbo stay bolt underneathoil supply banjo and all exhaust manifold nuts. Remove the four alternator bracket bolts and disconnect the power and exiter connections from the rear, remove the alternator. Slide out the ECU from under the dash, pull back the grommet into the engine bay that routes the engine harness to the ECU. Undo these connectors from the ECU and feed them back through the bulkhead. Undo the red glow plug unit wire feeds and auxiliary supplies from the positive battery terminal, reach in through the right hand headlamp opening and remove the loom connector from the glow plug control module. Remove the power steering pump and place it where the headlamp usually resides. Disconnect the charge air pressure sensor plug and inlet air temperature sensor from the plastic duct. Remove the charge air rigid duct from the area of the right hand headlamp, there are two torx screws accessed from the rear area of the right headlamp. Tie the engine loom and starter feed cables from the battery connector up high, onto the top of the engine. Leave the bolts in the holes a few threads for safety. Jack each side of the vehicle and place ramps under the front wheels to gain access to underbody.

Hey Guys, I have the car for over a year and drove it around 40 km through the year. Currently car has km. From time to time was throwing error code PAA Recently it went into a limp mode also. At home it showed me: PA21 - The charge movement flap cylinder 1 has a malfunction. The signal amplitude is less than a minimum amplitude P - The soot content of the diesel particular filter is NOT OK PA75 - The charge movement flap cylinder 1 has a malfunction. The emrgency position was not reached. I have played with charge movement flap using SD and it got better. There is no problem with the electric motor operating the flaps as it is moving correctly according to SD. Car did not throw error for another 2 days. However yesterday it came back with PA21 but only as stored and not current. It showed me 6 occurences of this error. It usually happens when car is being driven at low speeds we say in the city. It has power etc. SD is showing DPF actual values great - no problems there at all. All the sensors are functioning fine. Only one time it wasn't able to regenerate the filter. My question is - should I try to take out the intake manifold and clean it - which is not a pleasent job to do - or I should get a brand new intake manifold? I have taken a look under the car to see if the intake manifold is cracked etc. I know there was an issue with a screw on these intakes so what would you do at my place?
